The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) has introduced an exciting opportunity for California local governments to foster immigrant integration, build community trust, and strengthen their capacity to support immigrant populations.

The Local Immigrant Integration and Inclusion Grant (LIIIG) is a significant initiative that aims to create a welcoming environment and address the diverse needs of immigrants. With $8.2 million in one-time funding, this grant paves the way for impactful projects and programs that will shape the future of immigrant integration efforts across the state.

Purpose and Scope of the LIIIG

The LIIIG, launched by GO-Biz, catalyzes the development and expansion of immigrant integration initiatives throughout California. The grant seeks to achieve three primary objectives by providing $8.2 million in one-time funding:

  • Boosting immigrant integration efforts
  • Promoting community trust
  • It is enhancing the organizational capacity of local governments to support immigrant populations better.

The LIIIG empowers public agencies at the city, county, or department level to embark on projects that prioritize integrating and including immigrants into their communities.

 Duration and Potential Funding

The LIIIG spans one year, from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024. Additionally, contingent on funding availability, GO-Biz may consider awarding further funding for a second year, allowing for sustained impact and progress. This time frame enables local governments to plan and implement comprehensive projects and initiatives that effectively address the evolving needs of immigrant communities.

Eligible Activities for LIIIG Funding

The LIIIG offers a range of eligible activities that local governments can pursue to maximize the impact of the grant. These activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Economic Development: Initiatives aimed at promoting economic empowerment and self-sufficiency among immigrant populations. This may involve providing entrepreneurship training, facilitating access to employment opportunities, or supporting small business development.
  • Social Services Navigation: Efforts to enhance access to essential social services for immigrants. This may involve creating comprehensive information and referral systems, establishing language access programs, or developing cultural competency training for service providers.
  • Intergovernmental Technical Assistance: Collaborative projects that strengthen coordination and cooperation between local governments and other stakeholders. This may include sharing best practices, conducting joint training sessions, or developing cross-agency initiatives to address immigrant integration challenges.
  • Civic Engagement: Activities designed to promote the active participation of immigrants in civic life. This may involve voter education and outreach, civic leadership training, or community engagement programs to amplify immigrant voices and foster a sense of belonging.

Eligibility Requirements and Geographical Focus

The LIIIG is open to California Cities, Counties, or County and City Departments. Only local governments within California are eligible for this grant opportunity. In cases where a local government has limited capacity to administer the grant, they may consider subgrants to nonprofit organizations, enabling broader community involvement and implementation.

Conclusion

The Local Immigration Integration and Inclusion Grant (LIIIG) presents an exceptional opportunity for California local governments to spearhead immigrant integration efforts, build community trust, and enhance their capacity to support immigrant populations.

With $8.2 million in one-time funding, the LIIIG signifies a commitment to creating a welcoming environment that embraces the diversity and contributions of immigrants. By leveraging this grant, local governments can develop innovative programs and projects that pave the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future for all residents.
